#ELBA2035: INTERVIEW WITH ENRICO GIOVANNINI
Today’s interviewee is one of the most prestigious names taking part in #ELBA2035: Enrico Giovannini. Academic and economist, formerly President of ISTAT (Italy’s Statistics Bureau) and Minister of Employment and Social Policies under the Letta government, he is currently Professor of Economic Statistics at the “Tor Vergata” University of Rome, teacher of Public Management at the Political Sciences Department of LUISS University, as well as a board member for various national and international foundations and organisations.
His current role as speaker for ASVIS – Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development – makes the commitment of Enrico Giovannini an indispensable asset for the realisation of our project leading to the drafting of a Sustainability Manifesto for Isola d’Elba, especially due to his knowledge of Agenda 2030 and of the processes involved in applying its objectives to the specific situation in Europe and Italy.
Indeed, it was from the topic of Europe that he started illustrating his vision: ‘In the next years, all European funds will be oriented towards attaining the objectives set out in Agenda 2030. It will therefore be crucial that each region, each territory should be equipped to operate in coherence with this general trend. Even “Regione Toscana” will have to work in this direction, building a strategy capable of applying throughout its whole territory the agreed objectives and targets of sustainable development.’
Speaking in political and administrative terms, Enrico Giovannini’s hope for 2035 is that ‘the national and local governance system should become less fragmented, thus allowing for more effective and inclusive development.’
His detailed knowledge of Agenda 2030’s topics also makes Giovannini the ideal person to precisely indicate those which are indispensable for our territory: ‘As to precise indications, I hope we will have managed to achieve a good level of success pursuing objectives 14 and 16, respectively covering the protection of the sea and its resources on one hand, and the promotion of peaceful, inclusive communities on the other hand.’
Concluding his interview, Enrico Giovannini recognises the absolute need for ‘…the new global agenda for sustainable development to be in line with Agenda 2030, and for the regional and national sustainable development strategies to become an effective instrument to achieve the energetic transition of Italy’.
