ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is the world’s most widely recognized international standard for environmental management systems. It is used globally.
The nature of ISO 14001 allows it to be applied to all types of business sectors, purposes, and activities. It provides a framework through which an organisation can improve its environmental performance in line with its environmental policy commitments.

ISO 14001 specifies the requirements an organisation must follow to proactively identify and understand the environmental aspects of its activities, products, and services, and the associated environmental impacts.

It helps organisations define their environmental policy and objectives, understand how significant environmental aspects can be managed, implement the necessary controls, and set clear goals to improve environmental performance.

It allows an organisation to manage its obligation to comply with applicable legal requirements and other stakeholder commitments, and to regularly monitor its compliance status. This leads to continuous improvement of the management system and to enhanced environmental performance.

The Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2015) places particular focus on the following points:

  • Initial Environmental Analysis (a baseline assessment) using a dedicated checklist to identify the specific aspects of the activity and its environmental impacts.
Results are reported in a dedicated “Environmental Analysis Report”.

  • Definition of the Environmental Policy (through which the company establishes its environmental objectives and targets).

  • Environmental planning (based on legal and regulatory requirements, identification of significant environmental aspects, review of existing procedures or practices, evaluation of previous experience and past issues).

  • Definition and management of corporate risk and of the internal and external operational context, with the aim of ensuring business continuity.

  • Evaluation of aspects indirectly linked to the company’s activities.

  • Preparation of environmental checklists and execution of related internal audits.

  • Measurement of the degree of achievement of established objectives and targets.

  • Environmental management planning.

  • Drafting of procedures and operating instructions for environmental management.

  • Personnel awareness and training on environmental management.

  • Control of operational processes.

  • Management of internal environmental audits.

  • Management of non-conformities and corrective actions.

  • Management review.
