THE SEA, MUSIC, AND BOOKS: APPOINTMENTS ON ELBA.
With the arrival of the summer season, the island of Elba offers a multitude of important events, even from the cultural point of view. We’d like to list some which are particularly interesting, as they might represent an ideal conclusion to a day spent between the sea and the beach: just a quick dab of perfume, and you’re ready for the start of the evening.
Magnetic Opera Festival is an event dedicated to opera and ballet, having the peculiarity of taking place within the unique surroundings of the mine of Ginevro, suggestively illuminated to serve as a backdrop for musical masterpieces from all over the world. It starts this year on the 10thof July, with George Gershwin’s masterpiece “Porgy & Bess”, the first American opera about the lives of African-American slaves in the Southern States, containing a truly immortal song such as “Summertime”, sung many times by the greatest jazz artists, as well as Janis Joplin with her unforgettable rendition. The 15th of July will be the date of the dance evening “Tribute to Rudolf Nurejev”, followed on the 18thby the classical combination "Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci", then on the 22ndTurandot by Puccini.
Brignetti Literary Award.The original name “International Literary Award Isola D’Elba” has now been associated with the name of the author born on the Isola del Giglio, to whom SEIF -Sea Essence International Festival also paid tribute in one of its previews. Since 1962, this award has attracted to the island great authors such as Elemire Zolla, Heinrich Böll, Gesualdo Bufalino, Carlo Sgorlon, Alberto Bevilacqua, Mario Luzzi and Fosco Maraini. As usual, this year the awards ceremony will take place in the suggestive surroundings of the park of the Hotel Airone, on the 13th of July: the finalists are "Verso Sant’Elena” by Roberto Pazzi (published by Bompiani); "Ogni coincidenza ha un’anima" by Fabio Stassi (published by Selleri); "La madre americana" by Laura Laurenzi (published by Solferino). The evening will be presented by Marco Frittella from TG1 and Valeria Altobelli.
Elba Book Festival. Once again books, the ideal companions for a vacation on the beach, are the focus of this appointment with independent publishers, which is becoming increasingly popular because of the always varied and rich programme, full of encounters with authors, exhibitions, cinema showings and literary occasions in the bars and beaches of Rio Marina, Cava, Bagnaia, Nisporto, Nisportino and Ortano. Particularly interesting is the collateral "Trekking Book Festival" initiative, combining hikes in unique natural environments with readings of texts about the relationship between mankind and nature. As well as, of course, the presentation of the book "Racconti di Mare" (“Sea Novels”), created for SEIF – Sea Essence International Festival, taking place on the 17thof July.
Campo Lo Feno Musical Summer. An unmissable appointment for lovers of music, kicking off this year on the 13th of July with a concert of wind instruments from the orchestra of the Florentine Musical May Festival, and continuing until the 24th of August with a rich programme of solo artists and ensembles ranging from classical music to jazz, as well as encounters between different musical genres.
Elba Musical Island of Europe. Born in 1997, the Festival has recently espoused the idea of musical journeys combining music to the landscapes of the island, from the Roman ruins to the palaces and castles, from the churches to the islands. The definitive programme is still being finalised, but the anticipations are fascinating indeed, starting from the inauguration on the 28th of August with the concert at Fort Falcone for the 500thanniversary of Cosimo De’ Medici, until the closing evening on the 9thof September with the cellist Mario Brunello.
